How To hack your Ipod Graphics

Adapted from instructions found here

This requires a PC running windows. Though it is possible, these instructions do not cover how to hack your ipod on mac.

  1. First, you have to prepare your iPod. If you haven't updated your firmware recently, or have already backed up your music, you can skip this step. Download ipodrip and back up your songs. All data will be deleted from your ipod when you use these steps
  2. Download these: ipod updater and iPod Wizard. You will use iPod Wizard to alter the updates, and the updater itself to alter the ipod.
  3. Install both programs, then open iPod Wizard. Click on "Open Updater" and navigate to the directory you installed iPod updater to (usually c:\program files\ipod\ipod updater [date]). Click on this, then find the new firmware for your ipod. This can be a little difficult. Sometimes you can tell from the numbers (ie. the 3.1 version of the G4 ipod is listed as 4.3.1) Others, you will simply have to guess based on the pictures. Once you have found the proper version (or while you are loading pictures looking for it), click load, then use the arrows above the "load bitmap" button to navigate through the pictures.
  4. Once you have found the pictures you want to update, click "save picture" and pick an appropriate directory.
  5. Use your favorite picture editor to change the pictures to whatever you want. Though you can change them in any way, be sure to keep them in relatively the same position, as this will affect how they are displayed.
  6. Once you are finished editing the pictures, find the original file using ipod wizard, and click "load bitmap". Find the new version of the picture, and double click on it. Once you have done this will all the pictures you want to change, hit the "Write" button.
  7. When Ipod Wizard has finished writing to the updater, plug in your iPod, and open the updater (make sure your firmware is old, or you have backed up all data). Click on "Update" or "Restore" depending on which one is lit (ONLY CLICK ON RESTORE IF YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR DATA!), and let it finish
  8. Follow the directions and let your ipod reboot/flash its firmware. When it has finished, you should have a hacked ipod. Have fun

NOTE:We need help testing the ipods listed above as "untested". If you have one of those ipods and time to kill modding it, test it out, and tell us which version of the firmware you used with what iPod. Email me here if you want to help. We especially need the older models (2G and below). If you have one of those, and you successfully mod it PLEASE contact us.

This is an archive of the pictures I used on my iPod (if for some reason, you're too uncreative to make your own). They are formatted for the 3G/4G iPod , but some clever work in fireworks or photoshop will make them fine for mini or even (depending on how clever you are) Photo.
